Wrexham town centre key to city status bid

THE transformation of Wrexham town centre could be the key to securing city status, according to Welsh Secretary Peter Hain.

Mr Hain yesterday gave his support to any future bid by the town for city status.

His backing comes as Wrexham MP Ian Lucas said the council should begin preparing a new bid for a competition for local authorities to be granted the status to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012.

Over the years, Wrexham has made a number of attempts to become a city.
The most recent was in 2002 when there was a similar competition for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.

Wrexham was in the running in Wales along with Aberystwyth, Machynlleth, Newtown, Newport and St Asaph.

The eventual winner was Newport.

Wrexham Council has not yet made up its mind if it will launch a fresh bid, with council leader Aled Roberts raising concerns over the cost.

But yesterday Mr Hain told the Leader: “As the largest town in North Wales Wrexham has recently seen the establishment of the University of Glyndwr and the successful regeneration of the town’s shopping centre.

“Wrexham has much claim to become Wales’ next city and I wish it every success in a future bid.”

What the feck has the transformation of the town centre got to do with City Status.Unemployment is through the roof, industries and business's are closing at the fastest rate in history, people are becoming homeless because they cant afford to pay their mortgage, and all this pair of idiots(Hain and Lucas) can do is fantasise about city status.Even more evidence that politicians don't live in the real world, but sadly are the major cause of it's problems.

The University of Glyndwr doesnt even have a proper Photography degree - all they offer is digital lens media which is nothing like the BA in photography or Documentary photography. People wanting to do that have to go to Chester, Newport or other cities!

Peter Hain is talking rubbish.... he knows nothing of Wrexham or its people... and for once I think Cllr Roberts is talking sence... it will cost too much....as for W£rexham town centre being regenerated... now we know why Labour have lost support in Wales.... the mans a downright Idiot.

On his recent visit it's obvious he was only allowed to see Eagles Meadow and hasn't a clue about the real centre of Town....but then again Hain/Lucas won't be in power in 2012

You can imagine the scenario: Aide: We should support the city status application for wrexham, it may win us back some votes from the tories". Hain: Where.., is that in county down or somewhere?". Aide: No, its a town in north wales". Hain: Ok, wiki the town and write a concise speech full of soundbytes and suckering up to what the town wants and will sound popular".
