Wrexham MP welcomes city status competition announcement

Ian Lucas MP

WREXHAM MP Ian Lucas has welcomed the announcement of a competition for City Status as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012.

And he believes Wrexham stands a ‘strong chance’ of securing city status as part of the forthcoming nationwide competition.

He has called for cross-party support for a campaign to secure the status for the town when the competition is launched earlier this year.

The plans for a nationwide competition were unveiled yesterday as part of a series of measures designed to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Other measures to be unveiled include a one-off Bank Holiday weekend in June 2012 and a Diamond Jubilee medal.

Further details about all these developments, including the city status competition, are to be released in the coming months.

Mr Lucas said: “I am excited about all the plans and I really believe Wrexham has a strong chance for a city status bid.

“Making such a bid would be a real boost to the town’s reputation and status and a major boost to the town’s economy.

“Wrexham has come a long way in the past decade and its profile is even higher than when the town bid for city status.

“Wrexham securing its status as a Welsh city would be a real boost for North Wales as a whole.

“I want to hear as many people's views as possible on the matter in the coming months.”

With the extra powers that come with city status, I feel that Wrexham council has already shown its a no go. they cannot run the town properly now... it will get worse with city status not better. wrexham needs to sort itself out before applying.

I dont understand this obsession with city status, with the mentality we've have here it will probably mean more crime and traffic, i dont see any benefits

Can't see how one can comment on Wrexham's chances without knowing what the opposiiton will be.

how much will the council tax payer have to pay extra if wrexham given city status and what do we exactly gain from city status as tax payers , very little i suspect probably less services but better pension for those working for council!!!!

"Extra Powers"? Like what? The only powers that come with having city status is the ability to call yourself a city. It's all about notoriety and prestige, there is no actual difference. The only change it would mandate is that the county borough would most likely be changed to except "Wrexham City Council" in the centre, much like Cheshire West.

City status? Just try and negotiate the roads around the town after a predicted snowfall?

Wrexham a City ?...you're having a laugh Mr Lucas.... funny you didn't want to hear or listen to the peoples views until the general election became inevitable ....just another populist press release by a worried MP and another banwagon to jump on in the hope you can convince people that you care about Wrexham

You plonkers that have responded like you have are totally devoid of any local pride. You agree without fail at the failures of various council decisions and you completely undermine any positive news about the town. You are all a disgrace and unworthy of being involved with the the town. Wrexham City sounds quite good to me.

Ieuan..... there you go again blaming the people of Wrexham for the ills of the Town ...It's what we have come to expect from you...as far as pride goes ... why would anybody feel proud of living in housing that not only breaches healt and safety laws but has been a left over from the days of the uncaring Labour run Council

  10. Posted by: yachydda at 18:18 on 06 January 2010 Report

Ieuan: You and your ilk are just what Wrexham does not need, another Cllr Aled Roberts supporter no doubt. Wrexham City = More money for Cllrs and Leaders. More powers to confiscate land and property [Not allowed by bourough councils] without consultation in line with forming a City county council much like that of Westminister. increase in council taxes but NO increase in services.

Ieuan. On what merit does Wrexham deserve city status? Wrexham will always be a 'chips at 9 o'clock in the morning' town.

Whats in it for Lucas.? That's about as far as you have to look when a politician supports something. What's their angle and how is it going to increase their income or expenses.Lucas may not have realised this but 99% of the UK public view politicians the same way as they view that dog turd stuck to the welly.

Your responses highlight perfectly the point that I was making about the lot of you. As it happens I don't actually live in Wrexham but am a frquent visitor from a nearby town. But one thing for sure, I have far more more respect and pride in Wrexham than you lot of locals have between you. With friends like you you who needs enemies.

  14. Posted by: GBoycott at 21:59 on 06 January 2010 Report

Yes Ieuan, if you are happy with mediocrity and poor services and you consider yourself "proud" by that then you are indeed sad.

  15. Posted by: a cahill at 22:47 on 06 January 2010 Report

Hey Ieuan..... keep your hair on..... it's a competition not a foregone concluslion.....lets face it .... nothing comes of anything Lucas supports.... remember the Venture....and one Publican responding to his last much publicised effort on behalf of Pubs..... maybe you should look to the bunch of chancers that supposedly represent the proud people of Wrexham

  16. Posted by: Roland Cleth at 09:48 on 07 January 2010 Report

Look, city status of itself is no bad thing. There is an element of prestige, it does raise an area's profile and can lead to potential investment benefits and the like. Of course the various councillors/MP's will bask in their own heightened status but none of this will have any detrimental effect. There will be costs in changing a few sings and letterheads but nothing outrageous and nothing that wouldn't be outstripped by inward financial gain.

  17. Posted by: Roland Cleth at 09:50 on 07 January 2010 Report

...of course, the drawback is that Wrexham doesn't actually warrant city status :)

  18. Posted by: a cahill at 10:41 on 07 January 2010 Report

Plus the fact that if there wasn't an upcoming general election.... this wouldn't have rated a mention in political circles....maybe I'm just cynical about the cynical actions of certain politicians

  19. Posted by: Ieuan at 14:56 on 07 January 2010 Report

So acahill is a proud ctizen of Wrexham! Why then don't you ever give it any praise. Surely everything you read about the town can't be negative. As for the Yorkshireman GBoycott, he would'nt recognise Welsh pride if it stared him in the face.

  20. Posted by: a cahill at 20:39 on 07 January 2010 Report

Ieuan ..wrong again it is easy to see that you don't actually live in Wrexham.....unlike you I pay Council tax and I am registered to vote here.... therefore I have a right to hold the elected reps to account ...something you don't.... and as you aren't a resident it is obvious that you only see or hear and believe what you are told without actually experiencing it on a daily basis

  21. Posted by: a cahill at 20:50 on 07 January 2010 Report

Furthermore Ieuan it is the yes men like you that have helped to keep the chancers in power and allowed them to get away with the destruction of everything that is good in the Borough and act with little regard for the population

  22. Posted by: a cahill at 21:00 on 07 January 2010 Report

Ieuanbefore you go all snooty and Welsh....Would you make the same comment to Ian Lucas as you did to G Boycott .... it seems he's not a local like yourself....the main failure of you and the Labour acolytes is to remember that it is the locals who made the Town and the taxpaying electorate who deserve the respect of those elected to serve them

  23. Posted by: GBoycott at 15:09 on 08 January 2010 Report

Haha, boycott may be a yorkshireman, but its a pseuodnym dumbo. Or would you rather us all be called owain glyndwr and joey jones, get a life you sad welsh nationalist. i dont know why everyone seems to bash Ian Lucas whatever he does, it smacks of jealousy and a personal vendetta.

Hi GeoffB How can you be envious of a man who supports war crimes in Afghanistan?????,and who serves under one of the most corrupt of unelected ministers(Mandy). He is a travesty and morally destitute and on that basis alone he will lose the next election.
