Former Wrexham and Wales defender Steve Evans scored a stunning volley as The New Saints moved top of the Welsh Premier League.

Evans, who had been pushed forward at the start of the second half as TNS struggled to break down hosts Prestatyn, was on hand to fire a rising effort in to the roof of the net from just inside the penalty area.

Up until then TNS were frustrated by Prestatyn with Alex Darlington hitting the crossbar and seeing a goal bound effort blocked.

Scott Ruscoe saw a strike tipped over, while Darlington was brought down in the penalty area, but the referee failed to award a spot kick.

The game looked destined for a draw, but Evans broke the Prestatyn resistance five minutes from the end.

In the only game of the weekend, Aberystwyth fought back from two goals down to overcome visiting Caersws 3-2.

Mark Griffiths netted a brace inside the opening 17 minutes of the game as Caersws belied their lowly league position.

However, Aber rallied and they were rewarded for their persistence as Luke Bowen struck eight minutes after the interval.

Aneurin Thomas then drew the hosts level on the hour, before Bowen struck a second 10 minutes from time, volleying home after good work from Thomas and Kristian James.

Airbus, Gap Connah’s Quay and Elements Cefn Druids were amongst the teams to see their matches postponed after overnight frost.

Just the one Cymru Alliance  game survived nd it was at The Oval where Buckley Town clinched a 1-0 win over Caernarfon Town.

Honours were even in the first half with Eifion Jones and Mark Roberts combining to provide the hosts with their best chance and at Mark Orme fired against the upright at the opposite end.

Caernarfon did improve after the break and although Roberts skimmed the bar; a 65th minute controlled lob from Colin Quirk beat Mike Platt from distance to send Buckley home happy.

Connah’s Quay Town are the new leaders of the Clwyd League Premier Division after earning a 2-1 win at Mochdre Sports.

After a goal-less first half, Jim McGlone edged the Deesiders’ in front on 56 minutes and Lee Reynolds made it 2-0 after 80 before Dean Hughes pulled one back for Mochdre soon after, but Quay held on for three vital points.

In the Welsh Alliance, Rhydymwyn suffered their first league defeat of the season as they crashed to a surprise 2-0 loss at Nefyn United.

Jason Jones opened the scoring for Nefyn five minutes before the interval as Rhydymwyn failed to get going in the first 45 minutes.

The second half belonged to Nefyn as an own goal from Rhydymwyn left them with a mountain to climb as they stared defeat in the face.

The home side managed to hold on to the points and with Barmouth beating Nantlle Vale, Rhyd’s lead at the top was cut to four points.

Halkyn United will be glad to see the back of 2009 after slumping to a 5-1 defeat at Amlwch Town.

James Burgess, Darrel Charlton, and Ben Jones all netted in the first half for Amlwch, and things got worse straight after the break for Halkyn as the hosts scored twice more.

They were given something to shout about two minutes from time as Chris Williams pulled a goal back.

Icy conditions across Britain has led to Saturday's whole Blue Square Premier programme to be frozen out, while severe snow warnings remain in place for east and south-east England, the East Midlands and Yorkshire and Humber.

In the Blue Square South, three matches took place. Dover and St Albans drew 1-1, Newport County beat Staines 1-0, while Woking lost 3-1 at home to Bath City.

In the Blue Square North, just one fixture went ahead, with Fleetwood Town beating Stafford Rangers 2-1.

All of the Clwyd Junior League and Wrexham and District Junior fixtures were wiped out, while all of the Sunday football fell foul to the snow and icy conditions.
