Employees urged to take up sign language as extra skill

MORE employees in Wrexham are being encouraged to take up sign language as an extra skill.

Signs4Life is setting up introductory employee in-house courses in sign language and separate disability awareness courses over the next year with the aim of helping people to communicate with deaf and disabled people.

“You never know when you will come into contact with a customer, a colleague or member of the public who is deaf or disabled,” said Fozia Parveen, founder of Signs4Life.

“There are over nine million deaf and hard of hearing people and 8.6 million registered disabled in the UK and we are working with organisations as varied as Asda, Victim Support, the prison service, the Red Cross, housing associations, hotels, care homes, Specsaverss, schools, travel agents, photographers, hairdressers and Butlins.

“Each of our courses will help organisations comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.”

Signs4Life is also behind campaigns to introduce sign language into the education system alongside languages like French and Spanish.

I'd have thought Polish and Mandarin would be more useful.
