Wrexham residents 'oppose' nuclear defence system Trident - POLL

PEOPLE in Wrexham believe taxpayers’ money would be better spent on health, education and jobs than renewing the country’s nuclear deterrent, peace campaigners say.

Members of Wrexham Peace and Justice Forum and Wrexham Women for Peace set up stall in the town centre and canvassed opinion on Government plans to spend tens of billions of pounds upgrading Britain’s Trident nuclear weapons system.

Spokeswoman Genny Bove said: “Shoppers, workers, students and pensioners were among those who took part in the survey, which invited people to suggest ways in which the money earmarked for Trident could be more usefully spent by ticking their choices or making their own suggestions on a large wall chart and on survey sheets.

“The most popular suggestion was to use the money on health services, with education, jobs, the environment and public transport not far behind.

“Other popular suggestions were pensions, housing, benefits and childcare.

“One group of students felt strongly that there was a need for more spending on social care for disabled people; several people mentioned the need for more funding for residential care and home care services, and there were many comments along the lines of ‘Anything but Trident!’.”

She added: “As well as conducting the survey, we handed out hundreds of CND leaflets about Trident replacement.

“These alerted people to the cost of Trident replacement and the obligations Britain is under as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

“Government plans to spend ever increasing amounts of money we can’t afford on nuclear weapons, in clear contravention of the treaty, are being made behind closed doors without proper public accountability.”

I wonder if the same criteria that is applied to life saving drugs by the NHS will be applied to nuclear arms ... affordability and value for money

  2. Posted by: wrexhamdavies at 14:54 on 26 November 2009 Report

should of joined BUBA mr cahill, abetter class of medical care

Poorly worded poll question, i wonder what side the leader take, not.

  4. Posted by: tommy at 17:12 on 26 November 2009 Report

Spending on arms is out of control.1% of the money spent on arms worldwide would put an end to world hunger(UNICEF). Again our politicians are guilty of criminal negligence allowing the arms lobby to practically run the ministry of defence. The trident program is beyond obscene. It will make a few people very rich, but it will take money away that could be spent on health and education.

They do not want to wipe world hunger out, instead like to keep people oppressed, easy to mange the people who are poor, even a top general in the forces has stated trident is no good, and the army does not really want it ,and still they dont listen

Although I voted NO im concerned that countries like Iran and south Korea are a little more than dangerous... what deterant do we use against them ?... if they develope nuclear arm and its obvious they already have inter contenental misiles and capabilities... then what ?

  9. Posted by: wrexhamdavies at 20:12 on 26 November 2009 Report

thats the problem with the new world order, they said saddam had nuclear weapons, i seem to recall, did not find one, weapons of mass destruction, Iran and south Korea , et al might even have chicken and small pox mixed to gether to form a deadly virus, a bit like swine flus perhaps, bio chemicals, could wipe out an country with a few grams,

  10. Posted by: a cahill at 20:25 on 26 November 2009 Report

Yacchydda.... I voted no as well..... I can't understand why a Country in such a poor financial state would even consider spending that much money on arms when they already have a nuclear deterrent

wrexhamdavies. I agree with your point about the poor. And using poverty as a means of control is applied in the "richer" nations like the UK. Have you ever thought of a mortgage as an instrument of torture and ultimate control?? Because thats exactly what it is.Millions of people spend their entire working lives paying back mortgages to greedy parasitic useless financial institutions. cont

  15. Posted by: tommy at 21:42 on 26 November 2009 Report

A mortgage is the ultimate weapon in debt control.(controlling people through debt and fear of losing their homes) They then add to this buy taking large chunks of our taxes and creating weapons of mass destruction under the pretence of "protecting us"...when its actually our own governments that we need protecting from. Smash the financial industry and the arms industry and we could really get on the road to progress. cont

How much longer are the vast majority going to be treated like complete idiots by those who have the arrogence to call themselves leaders and elite. How long will it be before the masses realise that governments are founded on lies and corruption.

You might have seen that Ian Lucas, MP, and Lesley Griffiths, AM were the celebrity guests at the opening of the brand new branch of Barclays right here in Wrexham a few weeks ago. Barclays and New Labour are old friends. In 2001, Tony Blair’s government controversially approved the £28 million sale of a ‘white elephant’ military air traffic control system by BAe

Will somebody please explain why South Korea is dangerous, is it something to do with the US forces stationed there. The really dangerous states are Israel and Pakistan who both have nuclear weapons.

hen ddraig - "Will somebody please explain why South Korea is dangerous, is it something to do with the US forces stationed there" Nice one...yes, I think he did mean NORTH Korea.

  22. Posted by: tommy at 10:48 on 27 November 2009 Report

Roland Cleth, So you want to wipe out millions of men women and children.?The idea of humanity is to progress not return to the dark ages. Some people are born with a brain, but somehow never quite work out how best to use it,or even worse, let their brain be used by others. very sad.

  23. Posted by: Roland Cleth at 12:44 on 27 November 2009 Report

Tommy, whilst you're on your computer, go into Word, go to "Review" and click on "Research". In the dropdown menu, select "Encarta Dictionary: English: English (UK)" - make sure it's not (US) as it won't work - then type in the following word, "irony", under "Search for", and, finally, click on the arrow. That should explain it.

  24. Posted by: Roland Cleth at 12:46 on 27 November 2009 Report

Tommy, if you managed the previous one, try again, but this time with the word, "sarcasm".

  25. Posted by: hen ddraig at 13:52 on 27 November 2009 Report

Why does the Leader run these polls where you can vote as many times as you want. It just makes a nonsense of the whole thing.

  26. Posted by: tommy at 19:34 on 27 November 2009 Report

Roland Cleth so this means your a sarcastic ironist!!!! :) :)
