A TEAM of dedicated fundraisers have raised more than £1,400 for cancer research in memory of a nine-year-old boy who drowned in the River Dee.
Ray Woolley, of Connah’s Quay, organised a sponsored row from Flint to Chester earlier this year to raise money for the Deeside Cancer Research Committee, of which he is a member.
Ray and four friends took on the challenge in memory of Jordan Baker, also from Connah’s Quay, who drowned in the Dee’s treacherous waters in May.
Jordan had been swimming with his father and younger brother when the strong currents swept him away.
The group has so far managed to raise £1,400 to help support cancer sufferers and is still collecting extra donations.
Ray, 52, said: “I have lost so many of my friends to cancer, so I do as much as I can to help the committee.
“I’ve got two friends’ funerals this week and I just wish we could find a cure, especially for younger people and the next generation.
“We would like to thank everyone who supported us and made donations.
“We are hoping to make the row an annual event and have a lot more fundraisers planned.”
Ray is on the lookout for new members to join the Deeside Cancer Research Committee.
