Zero tolerance approach to under-age drinkers in Wrexham

PUBS across Wrexham are taking a zero tolerance approach to under-age drinking.

Thirty-two licensed premises in the Wrexham South Pubwatch area are taking part in the Challenge 21 Scheme, which sees licensees and bar staff taking a more cautious role when asking young people for proof of their age.

The scheme promotes the importance of requesting proof of age if a person appears to be under 21 when trying to buy alcoholic drinks.

Launched with the aid of North Wales Police and Wrexham Council, it has already been successful in other parts of the country.

Joss Thomas, licensing enforcement officer for Wrexham Council, said: “It’s great to see the Challenge 21 scheme being fully supported by our local licensed premises.

“It can often be difficult to determine whether a young person is of legal age to buy alcohol, so asking for proof of age to all under 21s is a proactive measure to curb under-age drinking.”

Challenge 21 has been introduced in time for the Christmas period, when more young people attempt to make an illegal purchase of alcohol.

George MacLellan, Wrexham South Pubwatch chairman, said: “The Pubwatch scheme welcomes initiatives like this.

"It helps us make a difference and sends out the message that we will not tolerate any form of misbehaviour.

“We are happy to work alongside the police and council to address theses issues.”

Great idea, but how will they deal with the 100's of kids carrying fake id ??, A girl i know of aged 15 carries fake id and regularly drinks in the towns bars and clubs, with her families knowledge and support...." we were the same at that age " is a statement i'm sick of hearing. Find a foolproof system regarding the showing of birth certificate...that should help.

In Liverpool there are machines located next to the doors, bouncers swipe your i.d. either driving licence or passport and your details appear on the screen - surely something like that would help with fake i.d's - and if everyone from 18-80 get swiped in to the bar/club, (it could help for health and safety reasons too? Like if there is a fire, etc?) there is no chance of under 18's getting in?

kg111: Its all well and good you saying swipe everyones id... NO.. I do not belive an ID system will work in this case... adults buy drink for kids..adults who were once kids who drank because other adults bought it for them. how to deal with it is not with an ID card system.

I mean,,, you go into a pub with your kids to have a meal....and a drink... the 15 year old son looks like hes above 18... but dad buys it.... how do you deal with it exept by regular checks... and too many of those will and does drive away custom.

I know plenty of pubs that do not check wether the clientel is legal or not... as long as they are spending money... they dont care... Its the Licencees responsibility to personaly check that everyone is there legaly... and that any people he thinks are underage are not consuming alcohol.

But at the end of the day, kids drink in pubs because they can get it easily on the streets... for them its interaction...they think its sociabl... thats where we need to consentrate... not in the pubs... they will look after themselves or go under
