PUBS across Wrexham are taking a zero tolerance approach to under-age drinking.
Thirty-two licensed premises in the Wrexham South Pubwatch area are taking part in the Challenge 21 Scheme, which sees licensees and bar staff taking a more cautious role when asking young people for proof of their age.
The scheme promotes the importance of requesting proof of age if a person appears to be under 21 when trying to buy alcoholic drinks.
Launched with the aid of North Wales Police and Wrexham Council, it has already been successful in other parts of the country.
Joss Thomas, licensing enforcement officer for Wrexham Council, said: “It’s great to see the Challenge 21 scheme being fully supported by our local licensed premises.
“It can often be difficult to determine whether a young person is of legal age to buy alcohol, so asking for proof of age to all under 21s is a proactive measure to curb under-age drinking.”
Challenge 21 has been introduced in time for the Christmas period, when more young people attempt to make an illegal purchase of alcohol.
George MacLellan, Wrexham South Pubwatch chairman, said: “The Pubwatch scheme welcomes initiatives like this.
"It helps us make a difference and sends out the message that we will not tolerate any form of misbehaviour.
“We are happy to work alongside the police and council to address theses issues.”
