Anti-facist group make Wrexham demonstration warning

Anti-facist group make Wrexham demonstration warning

A PROTEST meeting planned by the Welsh Defence League (WDL) in Wrexham on Saturday could lead to “day return intimidation” by its supporters from outside the area.

That is the warning from Ian Titherington, secretary of anti-fascist organisation Searchlight Wales.

Although he says the WDL itself is not a properly-formed body, Mr Titherington claims support for the meeting could come from members of the associated and much stronger English Defence League (EDL) across the border.

And he says Wrexham’s close proximity to Manchester and Birmingham, where the EDL is well represented, could mean its supporters are easily able to reach the town. Mr Titherington said: “The WDL doesn’t really exist as an organisation and is just a handful of football hooligans.

“But the EDL has hundreds of members in England and stated in a press release last weekend that it was going to bus people from there into Wrexham.

“They did the same thing at a recent demonstration in Swansea. There were two minibusfuls, who spent all day getting drunk. But after an hour or two, they dispersed and were moved away.

“I suspect there will be more support in Wrexham than Swansea, as it is closer to Manchester and Birmingham where the EDL is stronger.

“This means you could get ‘day return’ intimidation.”

Mr Titherington added: “When these people turn up, the air goes cold but hopefully there won’t be any trouble on Saturday.

“The local community have done a fantastic job by organising a gathering in the town on the same day, with music and food, which will show a positive image of Wrexham.

“Its multi-culturalism is one of Wrexham’s strengths.”

Mr Titherington’s assessment comes after Wrexham’s AM, Lesley Griffiths, described the organisation staging Saturday’s protest meeting as a “racist, fascist front that has virtually no support in Wales”.

The Leader has been unable to contact anyone from either the WDL or EDL for a comment.

“This means you could get ‘day return’ intimidation.” I don't think this kind of rhetoric should be printed in the press. It is both inflammatory and unnecessary before what is going to be a challenging day for the traders, shoppers and police of Wrexham.

This looks to be more of a threat than a warning...Searchlight are far from being anti- fascist though....more like instigators.

The Communities Festival poster: A Celebration of Diversity in the Community - music, dancing, food stalls, craft stalls, face painting, public speakers & lots of fun. Are the people of Wrexham challenged? Perhaps face painting is too intimidating? Agreed, the WDL wish to cause offence but it's likely they’ll muster small numbers and hardly have the capacity to threaten. The local response to organise a street party celebrating diversity and community spirit is inclusive & non-threatening.

hy oh why do these organisations and politicians try to demonise a section of society that has a legitimate concern about islamiic exstremism , searchlight would be better if the looked at the islamist exstremists that have a free hand in the uk,

Given the rhetoric from both sides which seems to be designed to inflame and does nothing to further a peaceful environment on the day......then it might be best to stay clear of the Town centre on Saturday

a cahill: you're obviously welcome to choose to stay away from Wrexham on saturday, but I'm afraid that means you'll have to miss out on the dancing, music and (non-rhetorical) fun...

MAAWxm. After visiting the Facebook site of the Wrexham Communities it appears that they too are getting 'day return' support from across the country from Anti Fascist groups. Considering the scenes outside the BBC caused by similar groups - that could be 'challenging' to Wrexham...

Why don't the politicians just listen to wdl concerns before ranting and protecting there own interests by saying what the union paymasters want them to say...

Thanks MAAWxm....... as a tax payer it's nice to be given advice on whether I have the choice to enter the Town Centre on Saturday....... one question though... will any profit you make go towards the cost of policing the event or is it down to the taxpayer to fund your overtly political shindig

Why does the Communities Festival have to be held on the same day? They could let the couple of dozen idiots from the WDL and EDL wander around for a bit shouting in the rain. And then, next week, the Festival could be held without the threat of confrontation. The Communities group could then prove their point by showing how much more interest and support there was for their event. Assuming, of course, they don't want any confrontation.

...and, I'd be be surprised if the EDL/WDL were any more fascistic in their outlook than Searchlight.

There's an election looming....... you know how it goes...... any bandwagon in a storm when your backs against the wall........no point in missing the chance given the circumstances.... you can always spin it later

"Why does the Communities Festival have to be held on the same day?" For the purpose of confrontation. The Communities Festival is an excellent idea which might be considered for genuine community spirit in future years but I suspect that it is a 'front' for a communist, socialist, and leftist anarchist confrontation on Saturday. Mr Roberts who set up the Wrexham Communities Facebook site and festival is no stranger to extreme politics http://www.socialistparty.org.uk/articles/7563

Saturday will be a day to take my custom to the Broughton Retail Park instead of Wrecsam. I

http://www.socialistparty.org.uk/articles/7563 - Interesting. He appears to be complaining about exactly the same type of tactics Searchlight uses against groups and individuals they don't like.

Searchlight is financed by the the Labour Party and Jewish interests. The idea is to present mickey mouse groups like the WDL and the BNP as"extremists" when in reality the real extremists are the mainline parties like labour,Tories ,Libe dem and Plaid (in wales) who maintain a corrupt eco-political systems that benefits rich bankers, and a socio-political elite. Its a farce.

thank you tommy for telling the truth people should take note as to who the real extremists are and who is putting this country in such a state

  19. Posted by: greenflyer at 18:48 on 20 November 2009 Report

also it is rumoured that the edl are in fact a front financed by one of the main parties to try and convince everyone that islam is good and britishness is bad
