THE sudden closure of a Flintshire town post office has caused mayhem for residents, according to a leading councillor.
Saltney Cllr Klaus Armstrong-Braun says elderly residents have been hit hard after the post office in Mainwaring Drive closed without warning last month.
He said: “We fought hard to keep this post office open when the closures were going round and I was shocked to hear that it had closed.
“It’s very important because we have a lot of elderly people living in the area who need to use it. It means that people have to go to the Chester Road post office, which is about a mile away and elderly people can’t get there without having to get a taxi or a bus.”
The post office closed temporarily on October 25 much to the surprise of residents.
Cllr Armstrong-Braun added: “I am shocked at the post office for not advising us that it was going to close.
"We knew nothing about it, it’s appalling of them. I demand to know why it’s closed and how long it will be closed for.”
A spokesman from Post Office Ltd cited ‘contractual and operational’ reasons for the temporary closure.
The spokesman said: “We apologise to customers that for contractual and operational reasons we temporarily closed Saltney Ferry Post Office.
"Some 98 per cent of our network of branches in Wales operate on a contractual basis between Post Office Ltd and sub-postmasters.
"Occasionally, contractual issues need to be resolved, which can result in the branch closing temporarily.
“We do understand the impact the closure of a branch has on the elderly, mothers with young children and the more vulnerable in our society.
“The provision of a post office service to our customers in the community is important to us and we are working to resume services at Saltney Ferry.”
