Flintshire residents campaign against takeaway

A GROUP of residents in Flintshire have launched a campaign to stop a takeaway being built in their street.

Neighbours living in Brunswick Road, in Buckley, have hit out at proposals to transform the former pet shop adjacent to their houses near the Tivoli nightclub into a late-night kebab shop.

Margaret Jones, who has lived in the street for six years, said: “There are already two kebab shops open late in Buckley and there is a racket coming from them and a racket coming from the Tiv.

“Buckley is quite a major place at night and this will make it worse. The other kebab shops are in the commercial area, but this is a residential area and all the residents are upset about it.”

Concerns have been raised about anti-social behaviour, noise, parking and litter.

The plans, which have been submitted to the county council by Jig Architectural Ltd on behalf of the applicant, include plans for a seven-metre illuminated sign as well as a late night licence until 2.30am.

Protesters have organised a series of meetings in a bid to rally support for their campaign.

Resident Dave Jones told a meeting on Wednesday that he was concerned the size of the outlet could lead to it being used as a sit-down restaurant as well as a takeaway.

He said: “I have a major fear that with a seven metre sign above it they will make it into an internal restaurant as well. I don’t think you need 20 feet of frontage for a little take away.”

The residents have submitted 23 objection letters to the county council and have launched a petition.

Buckley councillors Mike Peers and Dennis Hutchinson attended the meeting to listen to the residents’ concerns.

Cllr Peers, who also sits on the county council planning committee, told the protesters: “I have listened to your concerns and you can rest assured that I will take your comments on board at the decision-making time.”
