Airbus' Brian Fleet

THE head of the Airbus plant in Broughton has announced he will retire next year.

Brian Fleet, the aerospace firm’s senior vice-president and head of centre of excellence for wing and pylon, will stand down in March 2010.

Mr Fleet, who has had a 36-year career in aviation, said: "I'm very proud of the time I've spent at Airbus and everything we as a company and team have achieved in Broughton, Filton, Bremen and St. Eloi.

“I've been a part of the wing production for every aircraft in the Airbus family, from the A300 to the A380, which is a rare honour."

Dr Gerard Weber, executive vice-president, operations, said: "Up until March, Brian will continue to lead the centre of excellence wing and pylon, and to display the same commitment and vigour as he has done for many years."

Mr Fleet’s replacement will be named in the coming months.

To run efficiently an aerospace engineering facility that is at the cutting edge of new carbon technology and mass precision engineering is to be greatly admired. The logistics of running such an enterprise are staggering. Wales needs more Brian Fleet's.

...I run major projects for creating open source software with the long term objectives of reducing the Microsoft monopoly. Give me aerospace for 3 months and I could build you software that would do away with 90% of the management, and place control and development firmly in the hands of an open source cooperative enterprise. ....leading to a non-profit organisation, that create things that have a social utility.BA's owners are one of the biggest Arms manufacturers on the planet, they build to kill.I cant see that being effective research and development.

The human race's evolution can always be tracked by finding bigger and better ways to destroy itself.
