A BRIDGE which links Wrexham’s new shopping centre with the remainder of the town was praised for its ‘daring concept’ at an awards evening.
Wrexham Civic Society held its annual awards event recently to celebrate architectural achievements in the town.
The first commendation for landscape improvement was handed to Gwern Alyn House, a villa dated around 1890 within the Fairy Road conservation area.
The original boundary to the property had been lost. Piers and a low dwarf wall have recently been constructed from red brick with sandstone more in character with the house and enhancing the surrounding conservation area.
An award for restoration went to a late Victorian furniture showroom within the Cefn Mawr conservation area.
The grant-aided scheme for 33 Well Street included renewal of the roof and reinstatement of lost features such as the chimney stack, sliding sash windows, traditional signage and cast iron rainwater goods.
The upper floors were converted to residential use and the ground floor restored for community use.
Eagles Meadow access bridge won an award for new build, as a daring concept linking the new Eagles Meadow development with Yorke Street.
Wilkinson Industrial Park, on Wrexham Industrial Estate, won a commendation for new build.
The red brick buildings have been carefully detailed, in satisfying contrast to other more visually stark structures within the industrial estate.
The Wrexham Area Civic Society was formed over 25 years ago, and is a growing lobby whose overall aim is the promotion of a spirit of civic pride within the county.
More particularly, this entails the promotion of high standards of planning and architecture, the promotion of awareness of the geography, history, natural history and architecture of the area, and to secure the preservation, protection and improvement of historical and important features of the borough.
