A PAIR of kind-hearted women have been honoured for their achievements in helping others.

Anne Averil Davies and Jean Shone were praised by Welsh Assembly First Minister Rhodri Morgan, at the region’s first Recognising Achievements Reception.

Jean, of Shotton, was rewarded for looking after more than 100 children during her 41 years as a foster carer.

Several of the children she has cared for came from backgrounds of neglect or abuse, and many have stayed in touch with her to this day.

Anne has been involved in a voluntary organisation, which transports patients from GP surgeries to specialist hospital services, for many years.

She is also the chairman of the Prestatyn Central Surgery League of Friends group and is a volunteer driver herself.

Mr Morgan said: “I am delighted to be a part of these awards and celebrate the work that the ordinary people of Wales do.

“These awards are not about day-to-day responsibilities, but are about the exceptional contribution people have made for others.”
