Reason for Flintshire council staff leaving not recorded

MORE than half of the workers who left Flintshire Council last year did so without a specific reason being recorded, it has emerged.

The figure was revealed in a workforce report and prompted members of the authority’s people and performance scrutiny committee to call for staff turnover to be examined more closely.

Of the 838 employees who left Flintshire Council during the 2008/9 financial year, 33 per cent of departures were recorded as “reason unknown” and 20 per cent as simply “other”.

Cllr Doreen Mackie, a scrutiny committee member, said it was a great concern to her that employees’ reasons for leaving are still not being properly recorded.

Cllr Richard Jones raised concerns about the fact that the majority of unrecorded reasons were among school employees.

He added: “It seems that exiting interviews for employees are not being done in all cases.”

Helen Stappleton, the council’s head of human resources, said a new system for recording workforce data has recently been put in place, which will enable the authority to monitor the situation more closely.

She added: “Mechanisms such as exiting interviews will help us to address these issues.

“The council aims to make sure appraisals for every employee take place on an annual basis, with reviews every six months, so employees have the opportunity to raise any concerns.”
