A FLINTSHIRE primary school is celebrating collecting the primary school of the year prize at the Leader Education awards.

Ysgol Mynydd Isa scooped the prize at the awards night at the Village Hotel, St David’s in Ewloe on March 14.

Judges said the award would be given to the primary school who in the opinion of the judges has had an outstanding academic year.

This may be improvements in attendance levels, parent engagement or examination results. The school may have made or built upon partnerships in the local or business community, achieved new green credentials, or achieved competition success.

Ysgol Mynydd Isa is Primary School of nearly 600 pupils, operating on a split site, with plans to fully relocate to a new site in Autumn this year.

In an inspection report in 2022, it was commented that the school is a “happy and welcoming” community, in which “all pupils and staff feel valued”.

The school places a large emphasis on the Welsh language, which has seen various initiatives develop in recent years.

During Covid, Ysgol Mynydd Isa were praised for the 'exceptional progress' that pupils made, following the disruption to their learning and were asked to write a case study for Estyn outlining the work put in place to make this progress possible.

Upon collecting the award, Deputy Headteachers, Sian Salisbury and Emma Curtis said: “It’s a great achievement for the school, it really is.

“This award is a reflection of all the pupils. We’re amazingly proud of winning this award and it’s a testament to all the staff.

“Ysgol Mynydd Isa is a really happy place to work, we’ve got so many amazing pupils and we’re just so made up to have won.”

Other schools nominated for the award were St Mary’s in Overton and Ysgol Derwenfa, Mold.
