SAM HUGHES has expressed his gratitude for what Chester have done for his career after sealing his dream move to Premier League side Leicester City.
The 20-year-old defender, who has excelled over the past 18 months in the Blues’ first-team, has penned a three-year deal with the 2015/16 Premier League champions, for a six-figure sum understood to be in the region of £120,000.
In addition, the two clubs have agreed a number of add-ons in Hughes’ deal, including a sell-on clause and appearance fees should his career continue to flourish at the King Power Stadium.
Hughes, who hails from West Kirby, made 39 appearances for Chester last season scoring three times, and became the club’s youngest ever captain ahead of their derby clash with rivals Tranmere Rovers in March, at the age of 19.
Hughes was the subject of a £70,000 bid from Barnsley in January but chief executive Mark Maguire convinced the Blues’ board the club could command a greater fee for the highly-rated youngster in the summer, and that decision has been vindicated.
Craig Shakespeare’s Leicester fought off competition from a host of Championship clubs and League Two outfit Lincoln City in order to capture the versatile defender’s signature.
Hughes, who may have to bide his time in the east Midlands given the presence of Robert Huth and Wes Morgan at the heart of the Foxes’ defensive line, took to his Twitter page to pay tribute to Chester and both managers - McCarthy and Steve Burr – for giving him his opportunity to shine for the Blues.
“Just wanted to take the time to say how thankful and grateful I am to the club that have given me this opportunity to step and make this move happen,” he posted on his personal feed.
“From all the staff at the club, managers, coaches, my team-mates and the fans, you have all been unbelievable to me.
“Chester FC will always be a massive part of my career as I’ve been a part of so many great experiences and met so many good people duirng my four years at the club and memories will always stay with me.
“I wish the club the very best in the future and hope you have great success. Now for a new journey ahead.”
