A PENSIONER hitting the gym in his eighties is proving an inspiration.
Sam Martin, from Llay, has become an online sensation at the age of 83 thanks to a Facebook clip of him undertaking fitness training.
The clip was posted by Mike Irwin who owns and runs the Meritor Gym on Rackery Lane in Llay, when Sam began training there.
He said that if the picture and video got 300 likes, Sam could have free membership.
A short time later they had reached 500 likes and has had nearly 9,000 likes in a week.
Mike said: “Basically a week or so ago Sam just turned up on his bicycle and asked about the gym.
“I showed him around, and he did a bit of boxing on the punchbag so I posted it on Facebook – sort of to say to people that ‘if he can do it, what’s your excuse?’ as motivation.

“He asked whether I could offer him a cheaper rate but I thought ‘why charge him anything at his age?’
“So I gave him free membership for life.”
Sam, who has always kept active, says his motto is that “if you can do it – do it”.
He said: “I’ve always done quite a bit of cycling and I had passed it [the gym] for years. I just thought I’d give it a go.
“So I came and everything was perfect.
“I have five children and had to focus on them when I was younger. but even then I used to go to Wrexham baths early in the mornings – donkey’s years ago.”
Sam was modest when told his efforts were inspiring and motivating other people.
He said: ”Life is luck of the draw and my heart bleeds for people who are much younger than me that can’t get out of their chairs.
“So when I see people with disabilities climbing mountains or taking on challenges with their helpers, they inspire me.
“If you can do it, then do it.”
