A junior rugby club has set a new record by scoring the sport’s longest try.
Members of the under-13, 14 and 15 teams at Mold Rugby Club ran a relay, in pairs, from Llandudno Pier all the way to the clubhouse at Chester Road in Mold.
In doing so, they raised more than £4,000 and all funds raised from the 36.6-mile ‘try’ will go towards the club’s junior section’s annual rugby tour in 2018.
Each age group ran about 15 miles for a total of 45 miles, primarily along the coastal path.
Adults accompanied each runner either on mountain bike or on foot.
The under-13s started the relay at 8.15am on Saturday from the pier and players ran between 0.8 miles and 1.8 miles along their allocated section, passing the ball to the next pair.
Each age group took around two-and-a-half hours to run their 15-mile section.
Susan Miller, under 15s team manager, said: “We’re over the moon, everyone got involved, we can’t really believe it, we’re all still excited.
“We had an amazing time, the players loved it and Colin Ellis, our junior section chairman, got together a committee and they pulled it off.”
The under-14s took over at Rhyl and ran to Bagillt before the under-15s took on the most difficult section as much of the route was uphill to Mold.
All the players gathered at the Lead Mills grounds across from County Hall in Mold and the players from all the age groups ran the ball together across the River Alyn onto the club’s main pitch and score the ‘longest try’.
The only female player, Tilly Bennett from the under 13s, was nominated to score the try.
Welsh Rugby Union rules mean that Tilly can no longer play with a mixed team, therefore this has been her last season with her teammates.
Players raised a minimum of £10 in sponsorship money and parents and the community have been approached to place adverts in a keepsake programme.
The teams also bag-packed in various supermarkets to raise funds while the other age groups ran their part.
Susan added: “We don’t have a lot of money and we busted our guts every year to put a festival on but this was of very little expense.
“It was a bit of a logistical nightmare but now we’ve done it once, we found that it wouldn’t be that hard to do it again and the account would look healthy.”
