Tata Steel owners “should visit Shotton” to explain their decision in person

OWNERS of under-threat Tata Steel “should visit Shotton” to explain their decision in person.

Community leaders in the area say they want to sit around the table with the company’s bosses to discuss the future of the site.

Leader of Shotton Town Council Gary Cooper said: “The owners should come to Shotton and meet with local people and local dignitaries.

“We would really welcome a visit from someone to sit down around the table and explain the decision in person.”

Town councillor Dave Evans also said he would like the owners to speak out about the Shotton plant.

“We want to hear from the owner himself with regards to the Shotton site,” said Cllr Evans.

He also said he believes the impact on the local area – if the plant were to close – would not compare to the great loss of the 80s when thousands of Deeside residents lost their jobs.

“It is not like they are shutting the doors tomorrow,” he added.

“And we are in a reasonably good position here in Deeside with the business park and with the Northern Gateway.

“There are a lot of people employed at the Shotton site that are from across the North West. It is spread out.

“If it were to close it would have a far less impact now than it did in the 80s when people lost their jobs.

“Also if it was to shut it is a massive site for future expansion for another development.

“It might be a doom and gloom situation, but there is a rainbow effect at the end. There is a lot of potential in Deeside.”

Cllr Cooper agrees that the impact would be minimal compared to that of the 80s, but fears for those facing job losses.

“The knock-on effect will be felt by the employees,” he said.

“It is difficult enough for young people to get a job these days, so people in their 50s being made redundant have no chance.

“It is a lot harder to get a job these days than it was in the 80s.

“I have seen the qualifications these kids have to get these days and it’s scary.”
