Sheltered housing residents in Llangollen angry over cheeky parkers

RESIDENTS of a sheltered housing complex say cars being parked outside their homes are causing them problems getting in and out.

The housing on Llangollen’s Abbey Road is next to the car park of the town’s former hospital.

After the hospital closed, its car park was used by people to park their cars.

But now that construction work has started on the site, it has been sealed off.

This has led to some people parking in spaces belonging to residents of nearby Ger y Ddol sheltered housing, which is causing problems for some of the residents who have disabilities.

Ros Barber, aged 61, who lives there, said: “It’s a very real problem as I am disabled and it can mean I have to park far from the house.

“We have put our own signs up to tell people that it’s private but tourists just don’t know and we need more official signs.”

Another resident who did not want to be named said: “People have even got out and stayed with their children in our communal gardens to have picnics.

“There are a number of infirm and disabled people living here and they have nurses visiting who can’t use the parking because people have parked in our spaces.”

According to Llangollen county councillor, Stuart Davies, the problem has been made worse when Grwp Cynefin, the firm developing the hospital site, fenced off a strip of land on the side of the car park that did not belong to it.

He said: “Grwp Cynefin, on the face of it, seem to be encroaching on to our land but I am confident the situation can now been remedied.

“The issue with parking at Ger y Ddol is made worse by the loss of the former hospital car park that people used on an informal basis.”

Following a meeting on Monday between the residents, council and Grwp Cynefin two extra spaces will be made available.

Cllr Davies added: “We will be meeting with the residents to provide extra spaces and then we will be looking at means to deal with people parking in the residents spaces.”
