Man appears in court charged with murder of Gwernaffield woman

A MAN has appeared in court charged with the murder of a 45-year-old woman.

Darren John Jeffreys, 47, of Pwll Glas, Mold, entered no plea when he appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court this morning charged with the murder of Karen Catherall, who was found dead by police at her home on High Park in Gwernaffield, near Mold, on Sunday.

Jeffreys will appear at Mold Crown Court for a bail hearing tomorrow.

He was remanded in custody until then.And following that, Jeffreys will appear in a preliminary hearing in Mold on September 26.

At 4pm on Monday, North Wales Police had been granted an additional 36 hours to question a suspect.

Officers also confirmed a house in Pwll Glas, Mold, had been cordoned off “in connection with a murder investigation in Gwernaffield”.

Ms Catherall’s body was found at her home in High Park, Gwernaffield, in the early hours of Sunday.

Customers of the Queen’s Head in Mold said Ms Catherall was in the pub with a man on Saturday.

At an inquest, opened on Monday, North Wales East and Central coroner John Gittins said the provisional cause of Ms Catherall’s death – given after a post-mortem examination – was a blunt force head injury and “mechanical asphyxia”.He adjourned the inquest to a later date.
