Chaos at Wrexham Council: Was split caused by Plas Madoc fallout?

Staff reporter (Leader Live)

A LABOUR group insider yesterday said the split was caused by a vote at a private labour party meeting over the future of Plas Madoc Leisure Centre.

The Leader understands the vote was split 13 to 10 in favour of providing financial support for Splash Community Trust to help take over the Acrefair facility which closed in April.

Cllr Rogers and the nine others who have left the Labour party voted against providing support to the Trust bid to reopen the Acrefair centre, the Leader understands.

The matter was due to be discussed at an executive board meeting next week but a Wrexham Council spokesman confirmed the meeting had been cancelled as the shockwaves of yesterday’s announcement spread through the Guildhall.

The Labour source, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "The majority of the local Labour councillors have backed plans to reopen Plas Madoc from the start.

"True Labour has now emerged and once more given its full backing to the Plas Madoc takeover."

Cllr Rogers denied the split was caused by issues arising from the Plas Madoc takeover but said there had been a “bad atmosphere” within the Labour group for several months.

He said: “There have been several factors over the last months and we felt uncomfortable with the situation we were in. The atmosphere had been fragmented in the group for many months and we felt unable to continue in that environment.”

Chairman of the Splash Community Trust Darrell Wright said cancellation of the executive board meeting left him in the dark over the bid to take over Plas Madoc.

The Trust had initially been given a deadline of October 1 to take over the running of the facility, otherwise it would face demolition.

Mr Wright said: "I don't know what will happen.

"As far as Plas Madoc is concerned, I don't understand why Neil Rogers and the other Labour councillors seem to have such an anti-Plas Madoc feeling.

"Why would they resign, on a point of principle, over this?”
