Lloc girl inspires flurry of community fundraising

A FUNDRAISING event inspired by the bravery of a young diabetes sufferer will take place this weekend.

Last month the Leader covered the story of three-year-old Ellie May Hodges, telling how the little girl from Lloc, near Holywell, faces five insulin injections each day.

The community has turned out to support a number of Diabetes UK fundraising events to raise money for the charity on the back of Ellie May’s Type 1 Diabetes struggle, the latest of which is a fun day in the village.

The family has been overwhelmed by people’s generosity.

More than £1,000 was raised from a sponsored swim by girls at Holywell Swimming Club and a sponsored Rhyl-to-Chester bike ride by a trio of family friends and nursery school assistants who have been helping Ellie May contend with her condition.

Ellie May’s mum Georgina Hodges said: “As a family we are so proud of the way Ellie May has dealt with her diagnosis and it’s really heart-warming to know the local community feels the same way.

“People have been lovely about it – fantastic.

“They have helped us organise this and offered so much.

“The family fun day is going to be a huge celebration of all the amazing things people have done so far to support Ellie May’s fundraising.

“It’s also going to be a brilliant opportunity to raise more money for a good cause and raise awareness of Type 1 diabetes.”

The family received a boost recently with news that funding has been approved by Flintshire Council to continue the support Ellie May receives at nursery from a one-to-one member of staff trained to deal with children with type one diabetes.

Having spent time at the nursery at Ysgol Gwenfordd, Ellie May is now preparing to move to the reception class and Mrs Hodges said the support will be invaluable.

Starting at noon and finishing at 6pm, Saturday’s event will be packed with fun activities for the whole family, including horse riding, family bingo, a disco, bouncy castle, face painting, and lots of fun games with prizes to be won.

Gorsedd Road will be closed for an afternoon while the event takes place at the Druid Inn.
