Wrexham FC fans go back to the future

SUPPORTERS of Wrexham FC turned out in numbers at a couple of money-spinning pre-season events.

On Friday, excited Reds fans got their hands on Wrexham’s new kit. Produced by Nike, the red and black hooped shirt commemorates the club’s 150th anniversary.

Turning the clock back to the first kit the club wore when it was formed in 1864, the break in tradition from an all red shirt has proved a hit with supporters.

The launch at Eagles Meadow was judged to be a huge success, with commercial manager Steve Cook delighted with the response from fans.

He said: “It was amazing. I’ve never seen queues like it. It was unreal. The marketing has gone really well this year.

“There were hundreds of fans there – five times the amount we had last year. They queued right down the complex, past Boots, and were still there three hours later.”

The demand even prompted Mr Cook to splash out his money to keep fans dry while they waited. He said: “I nipped across to Sports Direct to buy some umbrellas out of my own pocket, because of the rain and the queues.

“I don’t know whether it’s because of the design, the fact that it’s commemorating the anniversary or whether it’s because it’s made by Nike, but we’ve had a great reaction to it as a club. My only concern is we’ve only received a quarter of our order so far due to a distribution issue, so I’d ask fans to bare with us if we sell out.

“The great thing about Nike is when we sell our stock, we can order more to arrive within two or three weeks which is better for the fans and feeds the demand.

Manager Kevin Wilkin cut the ribbon and the entire squad were there. “They are absolutely chuffed to bits with the new kit as well,” said Mr Cook.

l REDS fans also got a behind the scenes glimpse of life at Wrexham FC with the club’s Open Day held at The Racecourse ground.

Hundreds of fans turned out despite Saturday’s downpour to take part in tours of new facilities including a £300,000 pitch and redecorated changing rooms.

New kit launched the day before was sold with more than £30,000 swelling the club’s coffers.

Manager Kevin Wilkin and chief executive Don Bircham also took part in a series of question and answer sessions and fans had the chance to watch players training, despite the poor weather.

Mr Bircham said: “Despite the weather, I’d say it was a superb day. We were really surprised how many people turned out. Between Friday and Saturday we had a £30,000 turnover in terms of kit sales and we’re completely delighted with that.

“We’d sold out of both adult and child kits by the end of Saturday.”

Stadium tours were also held and fans had the chance to see the newly-redecorated changing rooms – which Steve Cook compared to those at Wembley – and the newly-relaid pitch.

An exhibition was also held at the stadium for the 80th anniversary of the Gresford Mining Disaster in September 1934.
