Cooling showers loved by creatures great and small

PARROTS and owls are being hosed down in an attempt to keep them cool as summer temparatures rise.

An animal rescue centre in Flintshire began the innovative practice last summer when its efforts to keep ferrets cool hit the headlines.

But now feathered friends are also getting regular showers to stave off the heat.

And such are the efforts of staff at Capricorn Animal Rescue, its animal residents have been provided paddling pools and even industrial size fans as part of the bid to prevent overheating.

Sheila Stewart, from the Padeswood centre, said: “We’ve been spraying the parrots and owls because the weather has been horrendously warm in recent weeks.

“You get the occasional cool day and then it goes from nice to unbearable – so we have had to be prepared.

“A couple of owls have begun taking baths recently which is quite unusual. But they seem to quite enjoy it.

“All the animals have got water containers and paddling pools.

“The rabbits have been moved to bigger units so they can get a really good air flow through, and the dogs have been given industrial-sized fans in each of the bedrooms in their kennels.”

Mrs Stewart added: “It might seem a bit unorthodox but everything is done with the comfort of the animals in mind.

“Water is vital, and we have to make sure there is always plenty for them to drink.

“You have to prepare for the summer like you do with the winter. It’s one of those cycles.

“In the winter, our volunteers were clearing away four of five feet of snow – now they are spraying animals.”

While the rescue centre is doing what it can to look after the inmates, Mrs Stewart has pleaded with owners to remember their pets while they are enjoying the sun – or the consequences could be tragic.

She added: “Animals are just like humans. They need the shade and a cool floor or a cool carpet – and dogs should never, ever be left in hot cars. It’s common sense but people still do it.”
