TWO staff members at a Wrexham after-school club have been sacked after a small child under their watch left the school grounds.
The incident took place at the end of May when a child left the Acton Park Community Primary School grounds while being looked after by members of staff from Chums Club, an out-of-school hours organisation for under eights organised at the school.
The child was later found outside the school.
As a result of the incident an investigation took place, following which two members of the Chums Club staff were dismissed.
The two members of staff appealed against the decision but at a hearing at the school yesterday both dismissals were upheld.
Chums Club manager Sharon Walker confirmed there had been an incident where a child was able to leave the grounds without the knowledge of staff.
She said: “This incident was investigated and as a result staff were disciplined and dismissed.
“I would like to take this opportunity to reassure anyone using our facility that we have taken this matter very seriously and have put procedures in place to prevent a similar incident in the future.”
Chums Club is part of a privately-run ‘full wrap-around care service’ for all pupils aged three to 11 which takes place on the school grounds during out-of-school hours and during school holidays.
Three clubs are run, namely Nursery Plus (part-time pupils), Chums (under eights) and Friends (over eights), throughout the year with the exception of the Christmas holidays.
Acton Park Primary staff declined to comment.
