Grieving family speak out after Holywell death crash

THE family of a biker whose death was caused by a careless driver say they have been left “devastated” and want “justice”.

Father-of-three Christopher Davies, 52, was killed after Gareth Ifan Ritchie, of Cae Delyn, Caerwys, lost control of his vehicle and crossed onto the wrong side of the road before the crash on the A5026 at Holway Road, Carmel, last August.

Ritchie, 23, changed his plea on Monday and admitted causing the death of Mr Davies by careless or inconsiderate driving.

In his basis of plea, which was accepted, Ritchie said he was not travelling faster than the speed limit and had claimed that Mr Davies had been riding at excessive speeds.

But the court heard it was accepted that the speed did not contribute to how the accident occurred.

Ritchie will be sentenced later this month.

Mr Davies’ brother Tim yesterday spoke of the family’s heartbreak after his brother’s death.

He said: “The family just want justice for him.

“We want justice for the devastation he [Ritchie] has caused because of his careless driving.

“My brother was an absolutely brilliant brother to me and he was like my best friend as well.”

Mold Crown Court heard on Monday that Ritchie did not recall the accident, but accepted the prosecution case against him.

The prosecution said Ritchie lost control on a bend and slid sideways into the path of the motorcyclist.

Mr Davies, a sales consultant at Lookers car dealers in Birkenhead, died at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan of multiple injuries.

His brother Tim, who runs Lloc Service Station, added: “He was a top class salesman, he ran for Wales and he was an excellent motorcross rider. He was a great all round guy.”

Speaking previously in a statement, the family said: “Chris was the best husband and very proud father to three children. We all loved him so very much.

“He always gave 100 per cent in everything he did and worked extremely hard to provide for us all.”

On Monday, Judge Rhys Rowlands imposed an interim driving ban on Ritchie and adjourned sentencing until July 23.
