APPROVAL has been granted for 20mph zones to be implemented outside all schools in the county.
The Welsh Government has signed off Flintshire Council’s programme to install advisory reduced speeds outside every primary and secondary school.
Work to put up the appropriate signage will begin in the next few days and is expected to be completed before the end of the school holidays in September.
The plan to introduce the speed limit cut was initially announced by Flintshire Council in September 2013 but has been hit with delays as Senedd officials ensured proposed signs were fit for use.
Providing each school with the signs is expected to cost the local authority £50,000.
Currently 19 of 84 schools have had the speed limit implemented.
Deputy leader of Flintshire Council and cabinet member for environment, Cllr Bernie Attridge, has personally spearheaded the move.
He said: “I am pleased to announce that, following approval from Welsh Government, work can now commence on the installation of the 20mph signs.
“Delivering 20mph zones outside the county’s schools has been a priority for this administration and, once installed, the new arrangements will help improve road safety by making drivers more aware of the school location which will help ensure they reduce their speed accordingly.
“Clearly speed is a key factor in road safety and this is a major step forward in protecting the safety of our children.”
Cllr Attridge told a meeting of Flintshire Council’s cabinet in June that, despite a delay in proceedings, the authority remained committed to introducing the reduced speed limits.
A report put to councillors found during 2013/14, the authority set a target of installing 20mph advisory zones outside 40 schools across the county. Initially it was thought only a further 25 schools were earmarked for speed limit completion during 2014/15.
Cllr Attridge said the advisory zones, once installed, would be assessed for 12 months to establish their effectiveness and to discover any problems that may arise.
