A COACHLOAD of Taiwanese tourists were among the first to benefit from a new bus tour stop-off point.
The drop-off and pick-up point on Wrexham’s High Street, opposite the entrance to the Butchers Market, is already proving to be popular with coach drivers, who can park for free under Eagles Meadow Shopping Centre after dropping off their passengers.
And on Saturday, 26 visitors from the Far East stopped off to see all the town has to offer.
Eagles Meadow manager Kevin Critchley, who helped to secure the new coach stop-off, said the influx offered a welcome economic boost
“A coachload of 26 Taiwanese people were waving £50 notes around and they spent their money in our shops,” he said.
“They bought a lot from JD Sports and then they went over to Poundworld. It was great.
“If 26 people all spend £50, that’s £1,300 we didn’t have before.”
The coach stop-off is part of a wider drive to increase Wrexham’s attractiveness to guests.
“We’re becoming a destination. The town looks clean, tidy and friendly,” added Mr Critchley.
“If we pamper the coach drivers, we can add an essential difference other towns don’t appear to give.
“It’s something we can do that out-of-town centres can’t offer.
“The fact we have got traditional markets in the town is a plus point for a lot of people on coach trips.
“The more unified picture we can sell to put the town forward as a destination, the better.”
The destination management team at Wrexham Council have been liaising with companies who organise coach trips around the UK to bring them to Wrexham.
Signs pointing to the coach parking are up from as far out of town as the A483 bypass.
The High Street stop has replaced the old “unsuitable” location at King Street bus station.
Wrexham Council leader Cllr Neil Rogers said reaction to the new signs, which direct drivers to the drop-off point, had been mixed.
“Some people in Wrexham do not want the signs and they don’t like them,” he said.
“But it is best for Wrexham. These people need to stop talking the town down.”
