New 40mph limit 'likely' for crash blackspot Pass

Staff reporter (Leader Live)

A NOTORIOUS stretch of road which has been the scene of 22 crashes in five years looks set to have a blanket 40mph speed limit.

Denbighsire Council said the Horseshoe Pass is likely to have its 60mph limit cut to 40mph.

A statement from the council said the move, which came after talks with police, will now be put out for public consultation.

Over the past five years, the A542 from Llangollen towards Llandegla and Ruthin has been the scene of 22 collisions.

Two of them were fatal, 10 involved serious injuries and the remainder involved slight injuries.

A Denbighshire Council spokesman said: “The speed limit on the Horseshoe Pass has been reviewed in conjunction with North Wales Police and the recommendation is that it should be reduced to 40mph.

“The consultation process on changing the limit will begin shortly.”

Llangollen councillor Stuart Davies is now sounding out public opinion on the blanket speed limit proposal.

“I’m asking for people’s thoughts on this.

“Do they think it will hinder people going to work over the Pass?

“Do they think it will slow down traffic? Will save lives?”

Cllr Davies added: “There have been a number of accidents in that area over the last five years with two fatalities.

“I’m of the view that better enforcement of our existing laws and better education of drivers at the hotspots would slow down traffic and safeguard lives rather than the blunt use of a blanket speed limit over the whole ofthe pass.”
