PAINFULLY slow broadband speeds in a small village have been slammed by a town councillor.

Pentre, near Chirk, has been identified as having one of the slowest broadband speeds in Wales.

It was listed as fourth slowest across the country as the area receives an average speed of just 2.15 Mbps.

Online comparison site uSwitch.com compiled a nationwide list of the fastest broadband streets in the UK.

But Pentre resident and Chirk town councillor Barbara Humphreys said when she checked her broadband last week the speed was a poor 0.7 Mbps.

“I think it’s disgusting,” she said. “We have complained before, but nothing is being done. We thought that if Chirk is getting a faster broadband connection then it would benefit us, but I’m not so sure now.

“It’s annoying that you don’t get what you’re paying for.”

However, just a few miles away in Pen y Graig Road, Brymbo, internet users have the luxury of the fastest broadband speeds in Wales, and one of the fastest in the UK after the list revealed it boasts an impressive average download speed on 31.91 Mbps, with Third Avenue in nearby Gwersyllt second notching up a noteworthy 27.68 Mbps.

The overall average for Wales is 10.87 Mbps.

Cllr Ian Roberts, who represents Pentre as part of the Chirk North ward on Wrexham Council, said: “The sooner there is an upgrade for the area the better.

“I believe there is an upgrade that will be taking place for Chirk and I hope that will benefit Pentre.”

Commenting on the national figures Marie-Louise Abretti , broadband expert at uSwitch.com, said: “Broadband is now widely considered the fourth utility, but our speed test data shows that not everyone is getting a decent service.

“Poor connectivity can severely affect local businesses, impact house prices and children’s education, which is why it’s crucial the government keeps its eye on the ball when it comes to improving UK broadband infrastructure, particularly in remote rural areas.”
