No trophies for Connah's Quay winning teams

WHEN the full time whistle blows on a championship-winning campaign, most teams are presented with a trophy.

FC Nomads of Connah’s Quay’s first team, who play on Thursday, and the reserves, who play tonight, will both be crowned league winners at the end of the 90 minutes, but will both be without their prize.

The Welsh National League (WNL) will fail to present the two sides with trophies at their final league games because they are yet to be engraved due to a staff member being ill.

First team boss Tom Taylor slammed the league, saying the decision is “ridiculous”.

“We can’t have the trophies because they haven’t been engraved,” he said.

“We have been told the guy who engraves the trophies is ill.

“They have both won their leagues and they want to celebrate it.”

He added: “It is like turning up to a cup final without having a trophy there.

“I’m very disappointed and I think it is disgusting.”

Mr Taylor says he does not understand why the sides cannot be presented with the trophies at the end of the games and then have them engraved at a later date.

He said the first team should have been presented with the trophy on April 19, but they were in dispute with the WNL over a possible six-points deduction due to

Nomads being forced to call off two home games after Flintshire Council said the pitch at Connah’s Quay Sports Centre on Golftyn Lane was not fit to play on.

A decision on the point deduction is yet to be made, but even if the side lost the six points they will still top the table.

Mr Taylor said the WNL has said both sides will have to wait until the first team plays its cup final against Llanuwchllyn on Saturday, May 10, to be presented with their league trophies.

“Most of the reserve team probably won’t even come and watch that,” he said.

“Both teams are going to miss out, it’s ridiculous.”

Last night Steve Williams, of the Welsh National League, declined to comment.
