Culinary challenge for Llandegla pub visitors

THERE was a very warm welcome for three culinary visitors to Llandegla at the weekend.

Brothers Matthew and Aron Glyn together with their friend Gafyn Lloyd are on a tour of Wales undertaking a series of Man Versus Food challenges.

It is being filmed as part of the S4C television show Y Lle, meaning The Place.

On Saturday they visited The Plough in Llandegla for the latest installment of their test and proprietor Keith Wilson had a menu waiting which left little to the imagination – it is simply entitled The Inferno.

The super spicy dishes include Hades chilli con carne, fiery chicken curry, fire cracker wings and a teardrop naan.

Matthew, Aron and Gafyn – who are all from Dyffryn Nantlle near Caernarfon – are taking it in turns to tackle the challenges. For Llandegla it was Matthew’s turn to step up to the plate while Aron and Gafyn offered support from the sidelines.

“I’m looking forward to giving it a go. I like curry, there is plenty of fun doing this and we all enjoy our food,” said Matthew as he prepared himself for the task ahead.

Before visiting Llandegla the food adventurers took on a challenge in Llanrwst and after leaving The Plough the next port of call on their belly-busting itinerary was Cardiff.

Keith, who has owned The Plough for seven years, said his pub runs regular fun food contests and was contacted by the makers of Y Lle asking if they could come to film.

“The challenges we have are really popular with our customers.

"We had one a couple of months ago involving a massive mixed grill.

"In all 30 people had a go at that one and none of the attempts to complete the meal in time was successful.

"The plate included an eight ounce rump steak, 10 ounce gammon, three lamb chops, foot long sausage, black pudding, rack of ribs, half a roast chicken, together with chips, onion rings and peas.”
The outcome of the challenge will be broadcast on Y Lle at a date to be confirmed.
