Friends fight Chirk hospital closure plan

A PETITION has been launched fighting proposals to close Chirk’s Minor Injuries Unit (MIU).

The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) has announced proposals to move all MIUs in south Wrexham to the Wrexham Maelor Hospital and a public consultation will launch on Monday. The proposals also involve moving inpatient beds from Llangollen’s Community Hospital to the Chirk site, while the future of the hospital’s outpatient department and other facilities have been secured by the board.

But supporters of the hospital have vowed to fight the proposals, with the League of Friends leading the way with a petition.

In a statement, the Friends group voiced concerns for workers at the town’s Kronospan and Cadburys/Kraft Foods, as well as visiting tourists, who would be forced to travel to Wrexham for treatment if the closure went ahead.

They added: “This is the dilemma which all residents will be faced with – possibly facing a long wait for treatment when they already have all the facilities on their doorstep at Chirk Hospital.”

The petition is available in Chirk Post Office, Chirk Hospital and Chirk Leisure Centre.

A BCUHB spokesman said: “We are keen to engage with the people of North Wales as part of this process. The Health Board is arranging events for the public in localities across North Wales.

These events will be held in local communities and the public will be encouraged to attend.”

If you wish to attend one of the events call 0800 678 5297 from Monday.
