AMBITIOUS plans worth over £1 million for student accommodation in the town have been revealed.
The exciting new project is planned next to Liquid nightclub at 4 Brook Street and includes student flats, a bar and two retail units, one of which could be a restaurant.
It is thought that more than 20 jobs could also be created through the development which is being proposed by Lingar Properties in Sandycroft.
The plans, which include 26 en-suite rooms for students, will be brought before the council’s planning committee next month.
The building, called Central Buildings, has hosted a number of bars and clubs in recent years including Bonkers, Razzmatazz and Groove which closed about a year ago.
Gary Poole, the owner of Lingar Properties, said he was excited to bring more upmarket student accommodation to the town.
“Wrexham has a drastic shortage of student accommodation,” he said.
“We are looking to create student accommodation which is a bit better than the average bedsit.
“We’re also trying to avoid the cheaper drinking scene and are aiming more middle market.
“We think this development, which is worth about £1.1m, will be a good thing to get Wrexham back on its feet and maybe encourage others to develop.”
The plans include an underground bar, two retail units on the ground floor and three floors of student accommodation.
Mr Poole said if the building is a success then the company may look to develop a further 55 student flats on empty land behind the venue.
The building already has planning consent for the bar and retail space but needs the rubber stamp for change of use for the student flats.
Mr Poole said if the planning is given he hopes the bar will open early in March with the retail units available for occupation by Easter.
He hopes the student accommodation would be ready by the summer.
Party co-ordinator from nearby Chicago Rock, Jenny Crisp, welcomed the plans.
“I think it will bring money into the town and the student accommodation is a good thing,” she said.
