Flintshire residents demand pipe repairs before freeze returns

RESIDENTS of a busy street hope repairs will fix a burst pipe before another big freeze strikes.

People living in New Brighton Road, Sychdyn, say the leak has wreaked havoc since before Christmas.

As temperatures plunged below zero, water escaping from the pipe turned the road surface into a dangerous ‘ice rink’.

Suzanne Owen, 44, lives just yards from where the leak is visible at the junction with Llys-y-Wern and Duke Street.

She said: “When the weather was bad the situation was quite treacherous.

“It was hard to see where the flooding was coming from because of the state of the roads.

“A lot of people drive along here and I would urge the situation to be sorted out to prevent similar problems if we have more cold conditions.”

Another resident, who did not want to be named, said: “I was concerned during the bad weather to see how difficult it was for cars.

“We have children going along to Sychdyn Primary School and I hope some action can be taken to help ensure everyone’s safety.”

Cllr Marion Bateman, whose Northop ward on Flintshire Council includes Sychdyn, has made frequent visits to the site of the leak.

She said: “This is a well-used road and something needs doing urgently.

“We have seen this road become like an ice rink that endangered cars and pedestrians.

“This particular case has gone on since before Christmas and a lot of water has been lost in the process.”

A spokesman for Welsh Water confirmed the company had received reports of a leak in New Brighton Road on December 19 and that a hydrant was repaired.

The leak had subsequently begun again and a temporary repair was made.

The spokesman said a team would be going out to fully repair the faulty joint last night and apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Any customers wanting to report a leak should call Welsh Water’s Leakline on 0800 281 432.
