A FOOTBALL match for a popular mother from Deeside raised more than £500 for a bench in her memory.

Kath Gaine, 54, from Shotton, who worked as a foster carer for Flintshire Council, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in August last year and died just three months later on December 21.

Friends and family took to the football pitch to raise money for the bench which will be placed at Hawarden Cemetery.

Kath Gaine FC, led by Kath’s son Rob, 23, won 6-3 against The Melrose Inn boys.

A delighted Rob, who even scored a goal, told the Leader: “It was absolutely brilliant and hundreds of people turned out.

“It’s what my mum deserved.”

Kath left her husband Jack, sons Andrew, 33, Raymond, 24, Rob, 23, and daughters Tracy, 31, Laura, 19 and Mary, 18, as well as five grandchildren.

Proceeds from future football matches will go to the Hospice of the Good Shepherd where Kath spent her final days.
