ON paper Caerwys’ North Wales Times Shield shutout of Clawddnewydd looks to be the shock result of the year.

But scratch beneath the surface and the reasons for the outcome come to the fore.

Joint-Caerwys manager John Owens described his side’s display as arguably their best of a troubled campaign, while Clawddnewydd supremo Mark Lewis again bemoaned the fact he was struggling to field a full XI.

Caerwys proved to be a pretty strong proposition, although they were missing the likes of Geraint Jones and Richie Roberts.

“That was probably our best performance of the season,” said Owens.

Good interchanges of play in the first half meant that the Flintshire side took a useful two-goal lead into the interval.

Jake ‘Yog’ Spencer and Tom Smith were prominent figures early on for Caerwys, who took the lead when full back Andy Price’s cross found its way through the hands of Clawdd keeper Olly Gray and into the net.

One became two for the home side when Caerwys man of the match Rich Mike Jones found the opportune time to grab his second goal of the season.

Jones put away a rebound after Gray had saved Tom Smith’s initial effort.

While giving their all on the night, Clawddnewydd didn’t create too much in the final third and Caerwys benefited from the added comfort of having Gareth Williams in assured form between the posts.

At the other end, the hosts really should have added to their goals tally as Tom Smith, Rich Mike Jones and substitute Owen Trainer all went close to finding the target.

“It was a struggle and we just had 11,” said Clawdd boss Mark Lewis.

Impressive performers for Clawddnewydd on the night proved to be Osian Roberts, Rob Lewis and Llion Jones.

“It was easily our best performance of the season,” added Owens.

That’s the end of the road as far as Clawddnewydd are concerned this season and Lewis said: “I want to say thanks to the consistent support we have had home and away this season.”
