Wrexham woman plans street party, ‘just like the old days’

A WREXHAM woman is aiming to recreate the days of open-air street parties.

Mature student Nicky Roberts is planning to hold a party in the Erddig area of Wrexham next month and she believes that if all goes to plan, residents won’t have seen anything like it since the open-air community celebrations which marked the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977.

Nicky, 38, said her party on a small green in Ffordd Glyn would mark no particular event but was aimed at bringing the neighbourhood together.

She added: “I am on the first year of a three-year play and play work course at Glyndwr and I suppose you could consider this part of my coursework.

“I came up with the idea in March and have been working on it since then.”

The date for the party has been set for Saturday, July 17, when Nicky has arranged with Wrexham Council for the main road to be closed to traffic from 1pm until 5pm.

She said: “I have had a lot of help and advice from the council’s play development team and the department which arranged for the road closure.

“My aim is to get more people out of their homes and doing things together like in the old days.

“I’m a bit nervous about it because I’m not sure how many people will come to the party.

“But there are about 250 houses along Ffordd Glyn and the cul-de-sacs off it.”

She added: “So far I’ve made all the arrangements on my own, which I’m quite happy to do as I am a very motivated person, but if anyone would like to help I would be pleased to hear from them.”
