Go-ahead for Flintshire housing plan 'monstrosity'

PROPOSALS for a massive housing development once branded a “monstrosity” have been given the green light.

Outline planning permission to build 122 properties on the former Bromfield Timber and Joinery site in Queens Lane, Mold, was granted at a planning meeting of Flintshire Council.

A similar development for 157 properties was first proposed four years ago but withdrawn after it met with furious protests from residents, who said it would put their children’s lives at risk.

There were also concerns about extra traffic and drainage issues.

Permission was finally granted this week after the developers agreed to include a children’s play area on the estate.

Connah’s Quay councillor Bernie Attridge said: “It’s been an ongoing planning application for many years. It comprises of apartments, flats and houses which I believe is the right mix for the kind of location where they will be built.

“A housing means survey tells us we need more one-bedroom properties in Flintshire.

“Although it is only 122 homes it goes a long way to meeting the housing needs in Flintshire and I welcome the decision.”

The council received 15 letters of objection from the public complaining about the lack of affordable housing provision and the impact on the character of the area.

Mold East councillor Chris Bithell was the only committee member to vote against the proposals.

He told the Leader: “I thought there was over-development on the site and I didn’t think it provided a mix of properties.

“I think people in Mold are looking to downsize their homes now and don’t want three-storey homes. The homes would just be inappropriate.

“However I am pleased they are putting in a children’s play area. They came back and altered the plans so I must give them credit.”

The plans, submitted by the Bromfield Group, include provisions for 14 two- and three-bedroom houses, 96 two-bed apartments and 12 one-bed apartments.
