An eight-week training course for a charity boxing fight night, which has raised over £73,000 so far, is to start next week.

Russ Williams’s gyms in Wrexham and Caerwys are partnered with Ultra White Collar Boxing (UWCB), a nationwide organisation which run events cross the UK to raise money for charity through boxing.

The gyms host an eight-week course for those 18 or over with little or no experience with boxing for free, and at the end of the course there is a fight night hosted at Brymbo Enterprise Centre in Wrexham, all in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The courses began in 2015 and have raised a total so far of over £73,000, which equates to somewhere between £5,000 to £10,000 being raised at each event at the end of the courses.

The next round of courses begins next week from Tuesday 1 March with a meeting for those who are interested this Thursday (February 24) held in the Wrexham gym on Abbot Street, above Penny Black.

Anyone that’s interested in raising money for the charity that’s over 18 years old can join the UWCB Wrexham Facebook group.

Russ Williams, the owner of the gyms and qualified trainer says that past participants have come from all over Flintshire, Denbighshire and the Wrexham areas.

He said: “I’m really happy to do it for a couple of reasons. One of them is that for a lot of people who take art, they’re unfit and never done any sport before but they want to raise money for Cancer Research so it’s really a nice group of people that come and it’s very pleasurable giving them the opportunity to get fit and a lot of them are encouraged to keep the fitness up after the course is finished.

On the event at the end of the courses, Russ explained: “They compete against each other and its with head guards and 16 oz big gloves so there aren’t any serious injuries afterwards. It’s just good fun for them. It’s nice seeing they enjoy the build-up and getting in shape. The most someone lost was about seven stone in weight in the eight weeks.”

The meeting will be held at 8pm with the subsequent training sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays also starting at 8pm.

The show at the end of the course will be held on April 23 at the Brymbo Enterprise Centre.
