CAERGWRLE residents aim to support a campaign that brings nature back to their area.

Members of Caergwrle and District Community Action Group organised an event with talks and brainstorming sessions in Hope Community Library showing support for the RSPB campaign 'Give Nature a Home'.

Over twenty people from the local area took part in the event and shared ideas about what they could do bring nature back to their area.

Steve Williams, group chair, said: "We had some great ideas for further action within the community. There will be organised events to tackle the problem of Himalayan Balsam, an invasive species which crowds out native plant species and leaves the banks of the River Alyn barren when it dies off in winter, contributing to problems of erosion.

"There were also ideas for taking part in Hedgehog Week, offers of help in building bird boxes and useful suggestions of further locations for community action to bring back nature."

The event followed on the heels of the success of last years’ wildflower planting session which took place on the Willow Playing Field last April and organisers said the wildflower bed was a tremendous success.

It was the first area in Flintshire to receive ‘Bee Friendly’ status as part of joint Friends of the Earth and Welsh Government scheme.

The Group has given two specific dates for Himalayan Baslam bashing as Saturday June 8 and 22 with exact arrangements to follow.

Caergwrle County Councillor Dave Healey, added: "I was impressed by the flood of ideas about what we could do in our own gardens and spaces to give nature a home.

"We are supporting our campaign with rock painting activities with young people so that we can spread the word about the campaign and we are also making use of the Caergwrle and District Community Action group Facebook page so that community members can share ideas.

"Already we have people talking about creating ponds, leaving fence spaces for hedgehogs and building homes for them and feeding birds with a variety of feeds.

"We have a lengthy list of valuable suggestions that have come from members of the community. We will also be making use of our community newsletter to keep local people informed about what is going on."

The organisers of the event have thanked the Hope Community Library for hosting the event, located in Castell Alun High School.
