A FORMER Deeside soldier told paramedics he had set himself on fire, an inquest opening heard.

Philip Clarke, of Deiniol’s Road, Mancot, died at Whiston Hospital in Merseyside on Friday, October 19, after an incident in Connah’s Quay earlier that day when he is believed to have set himself alight.

A post-mortem has given a provisional cause of death as being due to severe burn injuries.

John Gittins, coroner for North East Wales and Central, told a brief hearing in Ruthin that Mr Clarke was identified by his fingertips.

He said: “North Wales Police reported called to an incident of a man on fire at around 8.15am, a man understood to have a number of mental health issues.

“They arrived at the same time as the North Wales fire service made their way to the scene in Connah’s Quay and at that time, as I understand, he was being tended to by members of the public.

“He confirmed his name but no further details. He told paramedics he had mental health issues and had set fire to himself.”

The inquest was adjourned until a full hearing in March.
