A VISION has been set out for the running of football pitches in Wrexham by increasing the use of artificial surfaces.

Wrexham Council is working with the Football Association of Wales, which recently took on Wrexham AFC’s former training ground Colliers Park in Gresford, to revitalise football pitches and changing room facilities.

It could see an increase in the number of 3G pitches in the area alongside improved grass pitches.

The authority is also looking to bolster the number of girls and womens football teams, as well as giving local football clubs greater involvement in how their facilities are run.

Cllr David A Bithell, lead member for environment, said the proposals would improve the small and ‘nomadic’ nature of many clubs.

In a report he said: “The vision for future football in Wrexham is inspirational 3G community football hubs at education sites in key locations/communities alongside better grass pitches.

“A priority is to deliver growth ambitions and thriving club and women and girls hubs.

“If the vision is implemented, this could lead to better facilities for football, better quality grass pitches and pavilions and home football run facility hubs.

“Alternative more sustainable operating models for council run pitches and pavilions will also deliver public sector efficiencies.”

The council is now set to meet with various clubs in the Wrexham area this month in order to discuss the proposed vision for local football.
