A 30-YEAR-OLD Deeside man died because he had too much to drink during birthday celebrations, a coroner has concluded.

Kamil Damian Kmiec, of Gladstone Street, Shotton, was found dead in his bed by his wife Katarzina on the morning of Sunday, March 4.

John Gittins, coroner for North East Wales and Central, told an inquest that Mr Kmiec had spent the weekend celebrating a birthday party with friends but had complained of feeling unwell on the Saturday morning, which both he and wife had put down to him drinking too much alcohol the previous day.

After a fun-filled Saturday night of music and dancing, Mrs Kmiec went to bed at about 1am on the Sunday leaving her husband downstairs with two of his friends.

When he finally came up to bed, he was snoring so loudly Mrs Kmiec decided to go and sleep in another room.

She woke up at around 10am and after taking a shower, went into their bedroom to find Mr Kmiec, who was born in Poland, lying in an unusual position with his skin a different colour and cold to the touch.

An ambulance was called by a friend of the couple and Mr Kmiec was confirmed dead at the scene by a paramedic at just before 11.30am.

Pathologist Dr Mark Atkinson, who conducted a post-mortem examination, revealed his heart had shown signs of disease process.

There had been a hardening of one of Mr Kmiec’s arteries which had resulted in a 50 per cent reduction in its size while toxicology tests found the alcohol level in his blood was the equivalent of more than three times above the drink drive limit which is 80mgs of alcohol per 100mls of blood.

Mr Gittins said while Mr Kmiec did not have any history of alcohol problems, “had he not drank as heavily as he did, he wouldn’t have died when he did”.

Mr Kmiec was described at the hearing at County Hall in Ruthin as a man who loved listening to music, had a liking for cars and enjoyed cooking and spending time with friends.
