GALLONS of gorgeous fresh juice were pressed last week from the apples in Greenfield Community Garden in the beautiful orchard next to Basingwerk Abbey.

The event, which took place last Thursday, saw volunteers from Cyfle Cymru, a programme which helps people with substance misuse issues and/or mental health conditions into work, education or training, help freshly press the apples.

Roberta Owen of Holywell Transition and District, who were the main organisers of the Apple Pressing Day, said: ''We think the trees produce such a wonderful bounty every year because we wassail them every January – and have even composed some of our own wassail songs to thank and encourage them.

''Our volunteers were well supported by Karen Rippin, Greenfield Valley Heritage Park Ranger, who had even 'dressed' one of the apple trees, and also by Mike of Cyfle Cymru based in Shotton, who brings volunteers to help with the gardening on a fortnightly basis.

''So it was a great social event too – especially as homemade apple cakes with cream were served at a well-deserved break in the proceedings.''

New volunteers are always welcome at the Community Garden-and-Orchards, situated behind the Abbey Café. Work sessions, plus tea and socialising, currently take place on Thursday mornings - anytime from about 10am onwards.

Expert fruit and vegetable growers would be an absolute bonus, but complete beginners are as welcome.
