A CHILDREN’S play area has been branded a “disgrace” by community leaders.

The condition of the area in Acton Park was lambasted by members of Acton Community Council at their monthly meeting.

Comparing it with an ‘immaculate’ area in Rossett, they say it floods easily, it permanently muddy and on a slope, with Wrexham Council failing to get to grips with drainage problems at the site.

Cllr Kevin Hughes, chairman of Acton Community Council said Acton Park was a “disgrace” and could not be compared with the play area on the main road at Rossett which he said was “immaculate”.

He accepted that the Acton play area was probably more well used than the one at Rossett, but considering it is a ‘prestigious’ and park, it was a disgrace.

Cllr Hughes added Acton play area is constantly flooded or muddy, is on a slope and is maintained by Wrexham Council, but has never been able to be properly drained despite repeated repairs.

Cllr Phil Jones said: “I agree it is a disgrace – and Wrexham Council has wasted a lot of money but has not done the drainage job properly.

“Wrexham Council is always taking us to book for things so it is about time for us to tale them to book over the condition of the play area.”

The community council is to take up the issue with Wrexham Council.

Councillor David A Bithell, lead member for environment and transport, said: “I’m very surprised to see the comments regarding Acton Park Play area – we have spent considerable time and effort improving the play area and its drainage during the last year.

“Issues have been raised by the community council but this was only with regards to minor matters such as slightly uneven ground and grass matting.

“The play area is known to be very popular and recent works undertaken to improve the drainage have made it much better and easier to use. However, a representative of the environment department will speak to the community council to discuss the matter further.”
