Three people have been taken to hospital and 10 more have received treatment after a suspected chemical incident in Edinburgh.

The Scottish Gas headquarters in Waterfront Avenue in the Granton area was evacuated as fire crews investigated the cause.

Emergency services including police, ambulance and fire crews were alerted at 5.15pm on Friday.

Paramedics treated 13 people for minor effects and three of them were taken to hospital for observation.

The building, which has a staff capacity of 1,150 people, was completely evacuated by around 5.30pm.

It is understood that a number of staff members had been complaining about headaches and feeling ill throughout the day.

One said online: ”I was in the office today but left just before it was evacuated (and went home as I felt dodgy and vision was blurry, funnily enough!)"

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said at around 8.30pm that crews with breathing apparatus had left the building and said tests revealed that the atmosphere was at a "safe level" but further inspections would still be carried out.

Police Scotland said: "We received a report of a possible chemical incident within a Scottish Gas building in Waterfront Avenue, Edinburgh, around 5.15pm today.

"We are working alongside our partners in the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of this incident."

Scottish Gas parent company Centrica were unable to comment on Friday night.
