A ‘MEALS on wheels’ service will be rolled out to isolated and lonely older people by a community action group.

The South Denbighshire Community Partnership (SDCP), a Corwen-based charity for the promotion of wellbeing and social welfare, will be cooking meals for nearby elderly residents as part of a new initiative to improve their quality of life.

The service has been deemed urgent following research by the group that found many of the retired residents were not eating homemade meals due to their isolation.

Margaret Sutherland, chief officer of the SDCP, said: “The feedback from our research showed that many of our elderly and isolated residents were rarely eating homecooked meals and that prompted us to develop the Meals on Wheels service.

“It helps people to continue to live in their communities and also means a cheerful face will be calling regularly to keep in touch with them.”

The scheme has been made possible following successful funding applications, which have also enabled the purchase of a Toyota Rav 4 as a brand-new delivery vehicle.

The meals will be prepared at Canolfan Ni in Corwen under the supervision of scheme co-organiser Sarah Kenrick, landlady of The Grouse Inn in Carrog, where she has run a similar scheme.

Ms Kendrick said: “We hope it’s going to catch on and that we can build up the numbers.”
