Narberth food festival celebrates twenty years

The youngsters from three local primary schools will be taking over the festival marquee on Friday for its traditional curtain-raiser, Education Day.

This has now been named the Paul Davey Education Day, in memory of Paul, the festival's indefatigable secretary, who lost his battle with cancer shortly after last year's event.

The children, from Narberth, Tavernspite and Templeton Schools, will be making sure that the festival has its own birthday cake, as the creation of two giant celebration mock cakes with OrielQ curator Lynne Crompton is on the menu.

Award-winning Narberth butcher Andrew Rees is also in celebratory mood this year, as he notches up his 30th year in business, and he'll be sharing the skill of sausage-making during the day.

There will be a taste of Italian cookery from creative chef, Orsola Muscia and a butter-making session with Calon Wen.

Nine-year-old Narberth CP School pupil Betsy Harding Hole will be setting off from the festival on Sunday on a sponsored Big Water Carry for Water Aid, and she'll be talking to the children about this and the charity.

West Wales Biodiversity will share some wildlife food secrets in Hungry for Hedgerows, while there will be a poetry workshop with Emma Baines of Narberth Museum and yoga with Amelia Stone of Big Play Narberth.

Amelia will be helping to keep the marquee buzzing throughout the festival weekend with her free, bee-themed activities for children.

Said Narberth Food Festival chairman Colin Russell: "Education Day is one of our great successes.

"To see all those children getting hands-on with cooks and food producers is a joyful and different learning experience.

"Their smiles say it all."

Narberth Food Festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday with over 50 stalls, chef demonstrations, masterclasses, live entertainment and free children's activities.
